SkillsDB compares manager grades first (if available), then self-grades, against either person-specific benchmarks or role-level benchmarks. The calculation runs continuously — every grade update triggers a fresh analysis.

What’s the difference between a gap and a variance?

A gap means an employee is below the expected benchmark for a skill. A variance means the employee’s self-assessment and their manager’s assessment don’t agree. Both are tracked separately because they require different actions — gaps need development, variances need a conversation.
